Zero Km Climate
Smart Green Weather is a smart green weather initiative designed to help save resources by using meteorological data intelligently and consciously within a free digital ecosystem.
What may at first glance sound like a tongue twister is in fact the title of a project that captures its true essence; ambitious, interdisciplinary, and deeply rooted in the local territory. The project is being developed by our association in collaboration with several local institutions, including the municipalities of Busca, Tarantasca, and Roccabruna, associations such as Ingenium, and private partners including CLM , Nazari Automations, Tecno World and Lab 3841..
As an association of meteorology and climatology experts with a strong educational mission, we have identified the municipality of Busca and its surrounding areas as an exceptional open-air meteorological laboratory. Thanks to its unique morphology, this territory is ideal for studying zero-kilometre microclimates.
Within just a few kilometres, a careful observer can clearly identify a complex orography that gives rise to three distinct climatic zones:a predominantly flat agricultural area, a mid-hilly zone, and a pre-Alpine area characterised by woodland, alongside the urban environment of the city itself.
These zones correspond to the flat fruit-growing areas of the municipality of Tarantasca, the urban centre of Busca, and the hilly and foothill areas of Roccabruna.
This extraordinary natural setting provides an unparalleled laboratory for analysing meteorological phenomena linked to microclimatic variability. Over very short distances, temperature differences of up to 3 to 4°C can occur, as well as marked variations in snow cover persistence, often without significant changes in altitude. These differences are driven primarily by mountain breezes and varying exposure to sunlight, particularly in shaded areas.
The first phase of the project involved the installation of three smart green weather stations, capable of transmitting certified meteorological data without the need for an internet connection or external electrical power.
Parameters such as wind, temperature, relative humidity, rainfall, and leaf wetness allow us to study and better understand the area’s microclimatic diversity. The collected data are made available to students, enthusiasts, and curious citizens, offering an accessible tool for learning and awareness..Through future synergies such as collaborations with the University of Turin (Faculty of Physics) and local higher education institutions, this project aims to evolve into an interactive compendium of free digital weather servicesThese services can help communities save water for irrigation, optimize energy use for heating and cooling, and monitor a territory that is increasingly vulnerable to climate change, all at no cost to users.
To date, five green weather stations are operational in Busca, Castelletto di Busca, Roccabruna, Tarantasca, and Verzuolo, complemented by additional stations in Savigliano, Barolo, Mondovì, and Santa Anna di Vinadio, located at 2,235 metres above sea level.
This growing weather laboratory now makes it possible to integrate, validate, and harmonize data from other meteorological networks, including agrometeorological systems and private amateur networks distributed across the region. The result is a robust network of meteorological “sentinels” providing high-quality, validated data. This represents a crucial first step toward updating our collective climate memory in response to ongoing environmental and digital transformations.
Ultimately, the project aims to foster climate resilience by harnessing the potential of numerical meteorology to reduce human impact on natural resources, while simultaneously nurturing a free digital ecosystem that disseminates valuable data. In doing so, we seek to improve quality of life, empower informed decision making, and support safer communities, today and in the future..
This free digital ecosystem is available to schools of all levels to enhance students' scientific, IT, and interpersonal skills, including exploring new frontiers such as artificial intelligence, while keeping a close eye on the impacts of climate on our life cycle, relationships, and the environment.
In summary, learning to become resilient to climate change by using the potential of numerical meteorology to improve the human impact on the planet's resources, also fueling a free digital ecosystem that disseminates useful data to improve the quality of our lives, making us aware and safe citizens today and informed tomorrow
The interface of Zero Km Climate with the cooperative operational platform Meteopiemonte has aims to create a smart green meteorological information platform for the North West Italy area, in which the certified weather data from our meteorological network will serve as a validation sample for the other meteorological networks that will be integrated into the project
Our STEM Initiatives:
We’re teaming up with a few university degree programs and high schools to help boost students' STEM skills. Right now, we’re developing projects that use weather data from our free digital ecosystem to build new tools and indexes. The main goal? To help people use the planet's resources more mindfully and sustainably—starting right with energy.
ICE: Forecasted Daily Thermal Comfort Index:
This expected energy consumption index gives you a daily heads-up on how much energy you might need to keep a standard home comfortable inside (whether you're heating it in the winter or running the AC in the summer), based on the average outside temperature.
How it works in practice:
- An Intuitive Scale It uses an easy-to-read scale ranging from “Off” to “Very High” to give you a ballpark estimate of the expected energy use for that day.
- Smarter Adjustments This lets you tweak your heating or air conditioning to stay perfectly comfortable without overdoing it
- Reducing Waste For example, you avoid cranking the heat on an unusually warm fall or winter day (where the ICE is low/medium), or blasting the AC on a surprisingly cool spring or summer day. Without this heads-up, your thermostat might just stick to its usual schedule, which ends up wasting a ton of energy
